NEW - County Budget Hearings get underway September 15
Kitsap County budget review hearings for 2015 funding proposals from all county departments and agencies get underway Sept. 15. County departments will present funding requests for the 2015 budget to the Board of Commissioners, County Administrator and Budget Review Committee, an advisory group made up of a citizen representative from each Commissioner District and a county employee representing organized labor. Training for Court-Appointed Special Advocates takes place this month
Acting as Guardian ad Litems, Court-Appointed Special Advocates (CASAs) support the best interest of children involved in dependency cases related to abuse, neglect or where there is no capable parent. Kitsap County CASA volunteer training is scheduled to begin September 12, with an additional three-day session beginning November 14 .

Forest thinning begins next month in Newberry Hill Heritage Park
Newberry Hill Heritage Park in central Kitsap County will be the site of the first forest restoration thinning under the Kitsap County Forest Stewardship Program with work to begin on a 20-acre portion the first week of August and continuing through September.

Fire Marshal calls for burn ban in Kitsap County
As hot and dry weather conditions continue the outdoor fire danger has increased. In response Kitsap County is issuing a fire safety burn ban in unincorporated areas of the County effective July 14, 2013. This is a Phase 1 burn ban and applies to all outdoor burning except for small recreational fires in established fire pits at approved camp grounds or private property with the owner’s permission. The use of gas and propane self-contained stoves and barbeques will continue to be allowed under the ban.

Recreational fires must:

  • Be built in a metal or concrete fire pit, such as those typically found in designated campgrounds; and not be used as debris disposal;

  • Grow no larger than three feet in diameter;

  • Be located in a clear spot free from any vegetation for at least 10 feet in a horizontal direction, including at least 25 feet away from any structure and allow 20-foot vertical clearance from overhanging branches; and

  • Be attended at all times by an alert individual and equipment capable of extinguishing the fire.

This ban remains in effect until further notice.
